The Pier Pavilion in Watermans Cove, Barangaroo, Sydney

A Blend of Nature and Design

Sustainable Design from the Pier Pavilion

Design Inspiration: Watermans Cove, Barangaroo, Sydney

The Pier Pavilion is a stunning example of innovative design that celebrates its beautiful waterfront location. This vibrant communal space has become a hub for events and gatherings, offering breathtaking views of the harbour. What makes this design truly exceptional is its thoughtful integration with the surrounding environment.

Sustainable Design at Its Best

The Pavilion’s winning design, crafted by architects Besley and Spresser, showcases a deep respect for the land, sky, and sea. The building’s façade features custom oyster shell terrazzo, made from over 450,000 recycled Sydney rock oysters, mixed with Australian Marble chip, sand, and cement. This unique material not only pays homage to the site’s history but also reduces waste.

A Seamless Blend of Nature and Architecture

The rooftop garden is a masterclass in sustainable design, featuring endemic plantings, sandstone boulders, and hollow logs, all supported by a Cross-Laminated Timber deck. With nearly 2,500 native and drought-tolerant plants, this living roof creates vital microhabitats for native insects and birds. The thoughtful selection of materials, including durable and low-carbon timber, ensures a reduced environmental impact.

Design Elements to Take Away

The Pier Pavilion’s design offers valuable lessons for interior designers and homeowners alike. From the use of recycled materials to the incorporation of natural light and green spaces, this project showcases the importance of thoughtful design in creating functional and beautiful spaces. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key design elements that make this project so inspiring:

  • The 18-metre double-sided seating area provides ample space for relaxation and takes advantage of the stunning harbour views.
  • The 7-metre diameter roof oculus floods the space with natural light, creating a sense of openness and connection to the outdoors.
