As I drive up the remparts of Angoulême, the hairpin bends leading to The Plateau never cease to amaze me. This stunning area is the heart of the city, offering breathtaking views of the magnificent Charente Valley far below. As the capital of our department, Angoulême is a short distance from Cognac and a truly beautiful city that has captured our hearts since we first arrived.

A Personal Connection to the City

A few years ago, we had the opportunity to put in a conditional offer on an apartment occupying the top two floors of a building in Angoulême. Although our offer was accepted, our solicitor uncovered some unexpected challenges during the due diligence period, including the building’s lack of co-op or sinking fund and an unusual title issue with the dressing room in the main bedroom.

A Slice of History

Did you know that Angoulême has a fascinating connection to New York City? In 1524, the city was named Nouvelle-Angoulême in honor of King Francis I, who was born in Cognac in 1494. It’s intriguing to imagine how history might have turned out if the name had stuck!

Angoulême is not only a city of rich history and stunning landscapes but also a vibrant hub of creativity, renowned as the World Capital of Comics and proudly holding a spot in the UNESCO Network of Creative Cities for Literature since October 2019.
